Posted on Tuesday, Mar 1, 2011 - 4:16 pm: I'm looking at a five year old mare who is within a couple of weeks of foaling. The picture is of her as a three year old. The "dip" in her neck is apparent in a current video of her. What do you make of this and what specifically should I request with the vet check? Thanks, Julie |

He should confirm this is confirmation and not secondary to some disease process but otherwise I don't see that this has any specific health consequences with the possible exception you might need a saddle with a high cantle to prevent rubbing. As Dr. O said she does have prominent withers but I also immediately saw the small rise in the neck just in front of the dip. I thought perhaps it was a bit of puffy mane but now that you mention she looks cresty in foal, I'm curious. Are you looking at her as a broodmare prospect, performance prospect or both? |

She was a finalist at the 2009 NRCHA futurity. The neck is even more apparent in a video I saw taken yesterday and you could see both sides. What do you think? It's just not smooth, sort of a "rise". |

Posted on Wednesday, Mar 2, 2011 - 6:23 pm: Ohhhhh Julie! I always thought you were the smarter of the two of us; buying young horses rather than breeding! She's a well put together mare, overall, and I'll bet at 5 she looks even better because she's filled out and not as "gangly." Not that she's all that gangly in this picture...but you know what I mean. I'd be interested in seeing the video, as well, if it's possible to post it. But, without seeing it, I would say that if your main intention is as a broodmare and she's carrying a potentially nice foal and she's priced right then go for it. I would also think if you plan to put her back into training, if she has full range of motion of her neck and no problem collecting it shouldn't be an issue. Honestly, I don't know that I'd have x-rays or any additional testing on the neck done in the pre-purchase exam if it were me. Soooo...I know I'll regret asking this but what's her breeding? And who's she bred to? No..wait...don't tell me. I don't want to know. |

The picture of your mare brings to mind an article a friend sent me recently and the picture in the article is almost identical to your mare's. It concerns the damage that can be done by ill fitting blankets. Here is the link: https://sreinhold.wordpress.com/2010/02/28/horse-winter-blankets-how-much-damage- can-they-do/ Just a thought, Angie |

Posted on Wednesday, Mar 2, 2011 - 8:38 pm: Angela, that does look the same! Here's the link to the video--keep in mind this was taken yesterday and she's due to foal about March 17th. Sara, when I resist the impulse and think about it, I know it isn't smart for me to own a broodmare. I'm too far removed from the big shows and markets and I know I'm better off buying weanlings! Anyway, she's by TR Dual Rey, by Dual Rey out of Little Jessilena by Smart Little Lena, so double bred SML, so HERDA status needs to be confimed. She's in foal to High Brow CD. How about this, I buy her, get this foal and you buy the mare? We can have her rebred to your stallion choice in April! We can work out the details I'm sure! I'm serious here! |

Posted on Thursday, Mar 3, 2011 - 7:49 am: Ohhhhh Julie...that's not nice. I want that FOAL! lolI already have 7 horses and, if things go as planned, will have 3 more next year. I need to start reducing the herd not adding to it! I do not need another horse, I do not need another horse, I do not need another horse... |
