Hi Dr.O, I just purchased a set of Iconoclast Support Boots to use on my horse in the arena. Slider sometimes falls out on his back right. I was told from a person today that she had read the support boots could cause Laminitis. She said she had just been reading that if you use the boots all the time the tendon weakens? I ride in the arena at least 4 days a week. I just started with the boots. I trail ride but have never ridden him with boots. Your thoughts? Thank you.

Hello Judy, I have no personal experience with these particular boots but I can address your questions about boot use in a general way. There is no science behind these recommendations just what I hope is common sense. The only way I can see a support boot causing founder is if it is put on too tight causing hypoxic conditions distally. As to the weakness question, any time you reduce stress from a muscoskeletal structure it will respond with less remodeling to strengthen the structure over time. But it might be possible that man-made support may prevent damage to a structure it pushed a little to far. How does one address this dichotomy? This is one thought: if you have your horse doing stressful maneuvers with the potential for damage use the support only during the most stressful parts, to give a little extra help during those times. At other times allow the legs to take the full strain. Be careful to use the boots in a consistent manner. DrO

DrO, Thank you for your information on these. I will not ride him in these unless we are doing our maneuvers that would cause a lot of stress. These boots are different from the SMB. The Iconoclast boots designed to support and protect the suspensory and sesamoidial areas of the equine leg.The Patented Orthopedic Wedge® design feature, working in conjunction with their patented Double Sling Strap, provides unparalleled 360-degree support of the equine leg. Thanks again, Judy
