I show Western Pleasure and decided to get into Reining also. So I bought a finished 10-year-old reiner who has been campaigned very successfully. He has a definite preference for his right lead. I have worked on every aspect of rider error in applying aides, with only limited success keeping him in the left lead. He picks up the left lead fine, but does a flying change to the right lead at the first opportunity. The interesting thing is that, when lunged at liberty in the round pen, he will also swaps to his favorite lead. His trainer, who sold him to me, advised me to change him only on the straightaway, not the circle, to avoid possible anticipation to change. I have done that consistently. I have requested a soundness check, but our equine practitioner has left the area. The office has offered to schedule me with one of their general practice vets, but I haven't heard anything further. Does anyone here have any ideas to offer ?

Welcome Jane, You are taking the best first step: if an experienced trainer is having trouble getting a horse on proper lead have the horses soundness (muscoskeletal and neurological) evaluated carefully. DrO

Well, I never heard back from the vet's office, so I guess the practitioner does not feel up to the evaluation. However, I've noticed a change in the horse. I haven't ridden him in over a month because of the ice and snow. But I have been working him in the round pen and he is now holding his left lead nicely. My best guess is that he had an over use issue when I bought him and has recovered from that in the four months I've owned him. I can't think of any other answer.
