Posted on Monday, Jun 29, 2015 - 6:11 pm: Horses involves:1. Arab stallion, 24 years old, have owned since birth, COMPLETE gentleman, raised in a herd of broodmares, on the submissive side. 2. Arab mare, 12 years old, acquired over 2 years ago, in foal w/2nd foal by #1. (no previous foals) Training to ride. Mega sweetheart. 3. Mustang mare (friend owns her), 14 years old, brought on property almost 8 months ago, bred in April to #1, regular heats before then, will be her 2nd known foal. No aggression to other horses EVER. Was adopted from BLM at 2 years old. Totally trained, shown, bomb proof, all that and a bag of chips. Let's call her "middle of the road" as far as hierarchy. Another Mega sweetheart. #1 and 2 have been pasture buds, and 1 was with 2 when she foaled. All three were together til foal was weaned, then it was back to 1 and 2. (#1 has been with almost all of the mares he covered when they foaled and just loves his babies) #3 came with a rescued colt (not related) which 3 tolerated. Colt was cut loose with 1 & 2's filly when she was weaned. #3 had regular heat cycles (seriously folks, when she is in heat, she is incredibly vocal all day and all night) and #1 was put in her pasture the end of April. Unrequited love over fence lines ended with a 5 day romance. #1 was removed from pasture and #2 was put in. #2 and 3 doing the ol' "Ladies in Waiting". #3 was teased over the next 6 weeks, not interested. Rescued colt (now yearling) went to owner's folk's place for gelding, more training yesterday mid day. Yesterday evening, owner of #3 and myself with #2 took the girls on a walk outside the property, herd bound issues with #2. #3 went bat****crazy when we passed #1's fenceline, whipping around, double barrel kicks, and what could only be explained as "spraying" urine in his direction in the process. #2 was totally chill, but she's on the submissive side. It was as if #3 was trying to protect #2 from #1. Owner was in control of lead, corrected #3, and we continued down the drive past the gate.... On our return, got both #2 and 3 up to #1's fenceline and #3 totally went gonzo. Double the previous encounter, minus the "spraying", + rearing, owner was quick to spin #3 and correct. Again, it appeared to be an attempt to protect #2..who doesn't need protecting. I and the owner have done web searches for the last 14 hours, trying to find if this behavior is something "mustang", "wild horse", or just plain weird. I've NEVER encountered this in 46 years of horse ownership/training. Owner has NEVER encountered this in 20+ years of horse ownership/training. Combined, we've had all kinds of horses, the good, the bad, and down right problem horses. So................anyone have a clue as to what could possibly be going on? |

Their little rendezvous was cut short, no harm, no foal. Higher fence was built.None of the stallions on that property had ever thought of fence jumping until #3 showed up. |
