I've purchased a 12 yr old paint for trail riding that has not been ridden for 4 years. I've had him 2 months and have had him on trails 4 times and have done some interval conditioning also. I know we have a ways to go on conditioning but would like to know if his increased respiratory rate that returns to normal within 5 minutes when we unsaddle will resolve. I've never had a horse that breathes that fast on trails. He is willing to continue but I'm concerned. I've seen lots of gated horses on trails breathing rapidly but not quarter horses. I'm planning on checking heart rate on next ride after reading Dr Os exercise articles.

Hello Cowboysmom,
From your post we cannot tell if there is an abnormality or not and if there is whether it will resolve. Getting a heart rate is a good start but if you feel there are potential problems, I would also have his lungs listened to by a veterinarian and possibly have some blood work done to rule out many causes of exercise intolerance. If the weather there is like here, very hot and humid this may simply be a response to that. Respiration is an important way to regulate temperature.

Thanks. No noise with respiration. And yes it has been hot here too.
