My 3-year-old gelding has been pastured with his mother--or in the adjacent pasture--his whole life. For the past 6 or 8 months they have been together; in the adjacent pasture are two bred mares. For the past month or two a 1 1/2 year old stallion has been with them. Yesterday, I'm told, the stallion knocked down several boards and got in with my mare, who was in heat, and who stood for him. That was seen only once, in the afternoon when the barn owner came home from work. We guess these 3 horses were together for maybe 8 hours. When the owner entered the pasture in the evening, my gelding had been chasing the stallion, but then he ran at the man, who was nowhere near the mare or the stallion or even the gelding. My gelding then kicked the barn owner and continued to be aggressive until the man either got out of the pasture or stopped the aggression. I have no more details about that. Naturally the barn owner is very upset--as am I. I'm at a loss to explain the gelding's aggression; he is normally very calm and sweet. I feel that this behavior might have resulted from very "natural" reasons but am alarmed at the aggression towards the barn owner. Any insights or advice would be very much appreciated. The stallion will be in now until my mare is out of heat.

I do think the aggression the gelding was expressing toward the stallion became displaced onto the owner. Perhaps it would be best to remove the gelding from this environment with the hope he will lose these aggressive tendencies. DrO
