Discussion on Will our filly ever be a jumper? | |

Posted on Sunday, Apr 2, 2000 - 7:57 am: We have a gorgeous 2 year old sorrel filly with 4 white stockings. We purchased her about 6 months ago. We had hoped someday to train her for some hunter/jumper shows. Nothing real serious, but we really like to get our horses out and promote the breed. We noticed however, that her left front leg turns out slightly at the knee. I am having a vet come and look at her, but wanted to get others opinions as well. What would be the chances of this filly being a performance horse? Are such things correctable? I am quite disappointed because she is a beautiful mover and has an incredible extended trot and superb head carriage.Even our trainer is dissappointed because she had high hopes for her...specifically in the hunter/jumper circuit. Any help would be wonderful.Thanks. |

The prognosis for your horse will depend on the cause of the deformity and also the severity. There are some correctable causes, like uneven growth of the physis, but usually correction would require earlier attention than 24 months. Let us know what the vet finds, in detail. DrO |

Even the previous owner didn't, until I asked her to dig up foal pictures of her...sure enough it was there at birth...but not as noticeable. I was wondering if this could have happened due to her position in the womb? Our trainer was the first to notice it last week, and still I was sure it was just how she was holding her leg at that moment...but it isn't. Yes, I will let you know what our vet finds. Denise |
