Renee, The more the joints are stressed, the more they are likely to wear out . . . and if they are stressed when a horse is very young, there may be early signs of arthritis as the horse ages. That being said, every horse is different . . . What is the build of the horse? How heavy is the rider? What is the ground like? How often is the horse being jumped? Has the horse been conditioned for jumping? How high are the jumps? Good horses can be purchased from anyone . . . and there are both honest and dishonest horse dealers. As it is when you purchase anything, you are taking a risk. There are many things you can do to protect yourself from being "taken," and knowledge of horses, pre-purchase exams, "lease to buy" agreements and other things may help . . . nevertheless, you could pay $10,000 for a horse that has been checked out by a vet, and have that horse colic and die the next day . . . Two of my best lesson horses were purchased through a dealer who got them at auction . . . They had some special needs as far as feeding goes . . . but they were worth their weight in gold.
