Does anyone have any experience with composite stirrups, like Royal Rider or Prestige? Does the wider platform for your foot add to stability while jumping? I currently use the Sprenger stirrups to help relieve ankle joint issues, but I wonder if they cause instability while jumping?

Heidi, I just switched from the Sprenger to the Royal Rider. I like the Sprenger fine, but I was at a John Turner clinic where he made a girl switch out of her swivels because he said it destabilizes the foot/leg and that a $19.95 pair of irons is as good as anything. However, I read an evaluation of the Royal Riders in the Horse Journal and what I liked about what they said was the way these stirrups hang if you lose them and how easy they are to pick up. I also have the grate plate on mine. Since I ride a bucky horse, I was interested in the easy pick-up and now ride in the Royal Riders and I love them. I did lose my stirrup on a jump course and the stirrup was right there at my foot and not swinging around so I was able to catch it before the next fence. One thing though, the grate plate does scratch your leathers when you run up your stirrups so you need to be careful or get a plastic cover to go over the grate which I understand they now make to go with the stirrups. Finally, both these stirrups are expensive so if you know someone riding in Royal Riders, you should ask to borrow them for a ride first before you buy. Good Luck, Suzanne
