Hi all, I'm leasing a 24 yearold schoolmaster to give me some confidence and so I can relearn to ride while I get my boy back in shape. Problem is she is swayback...I tried a supracor and sheepskin, this was too much on the shoulder (very constrictive) but only about 1 inch of dry on her back, tried a thinline and sheepskin, much more dry 3-4 inches. Someone suggested cutting some foam to fit the dry patch and use the sheepskin and thinline. Has anyone tried this? Is there a miracle pad out there that doesn't cost much? I'll only have her a couple of months and her back is already coming up. Aside from the middle of the back, the saddle is balanced when placed on her and girthed up. Vet said she has a very strong back with no pain issues...I just don't want to give her any pain issues.... Ideas??

Aileen, the only thing I can picture is to make her back level with a pad that will fill in the lowest portion and will keep the saddle from bridging and gouging her behind the shoulders and behind your seat. If you can do that with a foam cut out, that seems to be a viable option. Foam compresses quite a bit, though, so you may want to put your hands under the front of the saddle to see what the pressure feels like when you or someone else is mounted. How about a good bareback pad like the ones manufactured by Colorado Saddlery? They have a front "tree" but it is there to keep the pad from turning and to provide safe mounting with stirrups, and is independent of the pressure added by a rider. Enjoy getting back in shape!
