Posted on Saturday, Aug 26, 2000 - 8:14 pm: I have a 5 month old A.P.H.A. colt. He is 13 hands......550 pounds. Yes a big boy. My question would be about his THICK neck. He has the possibility of being a real show stopper with one if...You got it his neck *dang*.Here is my question I know that a baby will grow all lopsided(front end then back end) But would it be reasonable to assume that the neck would thin out or elongate ? He looks now , at least to a judge that has evaluated him , like the botom of his neck starts to low on his chest. Is it a complete stretch to think that the neck will lengthen, thin out, or that the chest will become "longer" . My trainer (along with the evaluator) thinks that yes there is a good chance that this will happen . But I HATE these wait and see situations!thank you anybody for your time and help !!! Ken |

My breeder friends tell me to look at babies at 3 days, 3 months and 3 years to get an idea of how they will turn out. With my own babies, it has turned out to be a more accurate statement than I thought it would. I've also found it very comforting to look at the nice baby pictures when they're going through those terrible twos where nothing looks in proportion ... lolNancy |

I used to be stunned each time I went out to see my mare's foal years ago - the changes from day to day were often dramatic and seldom proportional. The 3 day, 3 month and 3 year rule is very good. At 3 days, you can usually see the skeletal structure, proportions, angles. At 3 months, the foal is usually still proportional and has filled out a bit. At three years, their body parts have recorrected their proportions and again they have a bit more flesh. In between, you get all kinds of skinny, thick necks, heads look big small, up hill and down hill, fat, thin variations. There are days when even you will think your weanling/yearling/2 year old is ugly and may be better suited to being a gargoyle. Keep the faith. Cheers. |
