Posted on Tuesday, Dec 12, 2000 - 8:18 pm: My husband and I do a little- we are going through heck trying to find him a good horse to pen on! He is much more in to it then I am, my horse is an ex- head horse, so he is confused, and a tad slow, and I would rather pen for fun. |

Posted on Tuesday, Dec 12, 2000 - 9:00 pm: I team pen also. We are now in to our winter indoor series, kind of chilly as we have that cold Canadian winter, but you get so excited you forget about the cool weather. We have about 40 people that show up for the winter one, we draw names for teams, pen for points for a buckle ect. at the end of the series, we jackpot at the end of the day, picking your partners. Anyways its alot of fun, and a good social for us all.....good to hear from other penners! |

Posted on Tuesday, Dec 12, 2000 - 10:50 pm: We live in Arkansas and i've been penning for about five years now. Of course i had to take almost a whole year off when i was pregnant and then recovering from my c-section. But when i was ready to get back to it, my horse got hurt. He has got an ulcer in his left eye and has lost partial site. I've been practicing on my mom's trail horse that had been trained for english pleasure. But surprising enough he's coming around pretty good. He really likes the game of it all. The first time i took him i figured he would run from the cattle. But when they said the eyes on he took off at a lope right into the middle of the cattle. But i am having a little trouble with his stopping and turning on his rear-end. We live close to an indoor arena that has practice twice every other week and a jackpot every other weekend. There having a big new years eve jackpot and i'm going to enter in the two lowest classes and see how we do. I took him to a jackpot this last weekend and only rode him twice. We didn't make the call back but i was proud of him anyway. I would love to hear from any team penners out there and would love to have suggestions on penning techniques, solutions and training. I would love to be competitive at this sport like I used to be, but until I get a better horse I guess i'll just have to do it because i love the sport and all the people that love it too. |

Posted on Saturday, Feb 3, 2001 - 4:03 pm: Hi, I have been riding several team penning horses owned by someone who is very seriously in to the sport. What a change from English, jumping or cross country! I have ridden Western before in fact my most loved and best horse was a barrel racer before her jumping career and neck reined on a dime. these team penning Q-horses do not neck rein; they sort of rein using 2 hands but one of them is very high in the standings and so must be very good. It's me. 1st the reins arre soooo long when just walking or when not asking i have trouble getting them up tight enough to halt correct etc.then loosen them again. Also when serched on team penning, I found a message about "heavy on the forhand" and boy that's what these horses are. I am not allowed to do any "training". But shouldn't they work better on their hindquarters? I hope to go and watch some really good riders this weekend. |

Our penning horse is cutting horse bred and trained, and neck reins nicely. I have noticed that due to the nature of team penning some people tend to be heavy handed, but the best team penning horses (in my opinion) are reined cowhorses (very light mouth and sides usually) and cutting horses that are just a tad to slow to be top cutters. And, as I posted earlier, ex ropers like my gelding are not great prospects... But you are right, penning horses should be able to get down and turn quick. Them cows is fast!!!![]() |

Posted on Monday, Feb 4, 2002 - 3:49 pm: Hi - I am a new member and this is my first time posting to the bulletin board. I have been Team Penning for 2 years. My new neighbor has been Team Penning for 5. We joined forces recently and are doing quite well at our local arena, and we're ready to venture out to more diverse competitions. We have tried many strategies and are currently working on a variation of the 1,2 sneak. The two most important things about Team Penning in my perspective is to #1, remember it is a TEAM sport, and #2 is communicate, communicate, communicate. Oh yeah and #3 Have Fun!!!! |
