I'm told my six year old quarterhorse gelding was a good trail horse, although this is the first warm season since I have owned him (Wisconsin). I have had him out a few times in the field and he walks along calmly with his head low and all of a sudden will lurch ahead for about four or five steps. Then he gets a grip on things and walks along quietly again for awhile. Almost as if he is daydreaming and then wakes up. Has anyone heard of this type of behavior?

The only problem that is remotely similar, that I have heard of is narcolepsy. A friend in my neighborhood had a horse with similar symptons. I do believe there is treatment. This may be entirely different than what you are dealing with, but it is worth looking into. Just a thought!

Could your horse be tripping on gopher holes or something similar? I think it is normal to take a few faster steps after tripping to get back to normal gait. Just a thought.
