Hello to all! We will soon be boarding horses. I am looking for any information on creating a boarding contract, specific to wisconsin. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Gina I do not yet have a boarding contract specific to Wisc., but there is one posted to the www.equinedispute.org site which I have recently drafted (and so I like it alot). I do not believe there will be much state to state differentiation other than any statutory circumstance like your particlular Equine Liability Statute which will require a specific wording as per the statute in the contract and on your posted signs at the facility. I highly urge the use of contracts because things go wrong and people are people. I also strongly recommend using a mediation/arbitration clause (available at the www.equinedispute.org site) because litigating disputes can be costly, time consuming, aggravating, cause an end to a long term relationship, and, mediation is private and not open to the public viz. the court system.

Make sure to put in your contract that you have the owners permision to call a vet in an emergency. We have this in our contract and were able to save our boarder's horses life when he put his leg through a culvert. Every minute counted and valuable time would have been lost if we had to contact the owner for permission and then called the vet. The second call we made was to the owner of the horse and she met us at the barn. The vet took 3 1/2 hours to stitch him up. He is fine and well no lameness at all.
