I am looking to purchase a horse and would like to have a three week trial period before my purchase is final. I did this with one horse whose owner was agreeable. During the period, I had the horse vetted and then discovered a soundness probelm. I returned the horse and received a refund, less and agreed to "lease feed." I have been told that several states have statutes that mandate such trial periods. Can anyone confirm or guide me to websites. I live in PA so, naturally PA law is most applicable but I live close to VA and MD so I might seek to purchase horses in those states. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Kathleen, I do not believe any states mandate such a trial period by law. Though I love to get trial periods for horses I buy as a occasional horse seller I do not give them: there is too much that can happen after the horse left the property. We did this once many years ago and the horse had an injury that resulted in his death. Fortunately we had him insured but lost a considerable sum and probably experienced more grief, him still belonging to us, having to arrange for transportation, burial, etc.. We do allow unlimited supervised riding, vet checks, access to all medical records but the horse stays under our care till paid for. Just offer it as food for thought. DrO
