MemberHi Dr, O
My friend has a 11 yo mare who tends to colic every month during her cycle. Symptoms are mild and easily managed, but she also has a very drastic change in behavior (she becomes a lot more tolerant to other horses and humans).
This mare had a filly who is now a yearling and is showing the same type of colic discomfort starting her cycles.
The owner is wondering if this can be some genetic predisposition or a specific hormone that she could investigate about?
Are there any articles in the library about colic symptoms associated to hormones?
Thank you

KeymasterHello clauee,
How many months old is the yearling? I do not know of any commonly recognized hormonal induced colic’s though behavioral changes are usual. If there is a strong correlation of the onset of colic occurring during estrus I would have the veterinarian out to palpate and ultrasound the repro tract looking for abnormalities and ovulation in particular comes to mind, though I have not seen any such cases. Preventing estrus would be a different way to handle this problem.
