Hi Dr. O
In the article about EHV-1 it says that:“The general feeling is that vaccination, at least by the killed product (see below), does not protect against the neurological disease and it has been hypothesized it may worsen it”
Can you tell me more about the idea that it may worsen it?
Thank you

The thought was there is an inflammatory component to the disease and the killed product may not stop the virus but increase the amount of inflammation. I continue not to find support for this idea. However if your horse is at substantial risk to EHV-1 you should be using the MLV product.

Thank you for your response. There is a big outbreak of neurologic form of EHV in Ontario right now, although a bit far from me I will ask for the MLV vaccine for my horses this year.
Also, recently my 19 months old filly had the EHV vaccine (killed virus) and developed respiratory symptoms of EHV, around 12 days after her shot. She is my only sick horse in the herd.
My farm is private and the only person who came to my barn in months is the vet (no delivery or friends or other horses… and I didn’t travel to any other barn either).
So there is no possible entry for an equine virus other than the vet or vaccine she received lately.
She had nasal discharge and cough, no fever or loss of appetite, and she lives outdoors where the quality of air is good.
Is it possible that the vaccine triggered the disease? She received Prestige2 from Merck. -

After the first infection with a herpes virus horses do not eliminate the virus from their system. It lies dormant until some event allows it to rear it’s ugly head, so disease can occur without exposure. As to getting an infection from a killed vaccine, it just does not occur. I have seen many horses develop respiratory disease or fevers with no recent history of direct exposure to a new horse or vaccination.

Thank you.
So I understand that my filly carries the virus? Does that mean vaccination for her is not relevant in the future? -

No, while in the quiescent state there is no stimultion of the immune system. Vaccination helps suppress recrudescence. For a good example of this see the recent post https://horseadvice.com/equine-horse/outbreak-of-equid-herpesvirus-1-abortions/#post-20022.
