MemberMy gelding has gotten these welts, hives 3 times in the last 6 weeks. He is a pasture horse, 11, never had before. I read your article and will start the process off elimination, but wondered ‘what’ it was? Hives? Or ? Not warm, eating just fine..seems to go away in a couple days..with maybe a little scurf a few days later when I groom him.
Thank you in advance!

KeymasterHi Mary, there is not much that looks and behaves like hives but hives are a symptom not a disease as explained in the article. I am not sure I understand your question. Would you like to post a photo?

KeymasterHow many of these welts, almost a coalescing group of hives, does the horse have and what is their distribution? The unusual shape suggests a reaction to contact with some irritant or allergen.

MemberThey were just on one side of his body, which made me think it was something he laid down on in pasture. Bc it has happened 3 times it 6 weeks I wanted to ask. They are usually gone in 2 days. Followed your article and gave it a good shower. Would you call that hives..or?
Sorry it took so long to post pic. Was trying from iPad instead of iPhone. Lesson learned.

KeymasterYes that is hives, a symptom of an allergic reaction but not a diagnosis of cause. What plants do you have in the pasture? Buttercups produce a irritant. I have seen a number of these recurrent undiagnosed hive episodes and they all stop in time, but the time can be variable. Important is to note the course. Is it improving, staying the same, or worsening.
