Introduction
Poor reproductive performance causes substantial economic loss to the equine industry. When histological evaluation of the endometrium has exclusively been used to predict the breeding potential in mares, a wide range of results has been obtained.(1-4) Discrepancies between studies may be explained by variation in the classification of biopsy specimens, the interpretation of characteristics of study populations, and by the lack of statistical analysis, which leads to erroneous conclusions. Pregnancy failure and early abortions are seldom explained by one factor. The important effect of age, parity, and biopsy grade on pregnancy has previously been demonstrated.(1-3) A prospective study was designed to evaluate the effect of histopathological diagnosis, parity, and age on the prediction of subsequent pregnancy in the mare.
