In autoimmune disorders the horse's immune system begins to attack the horse's own tissues. This is unlike an allergic reaction where the immune system over reacts to a foreign stimulus called an antigen. Unfortunately horses suffer from two autoimmune skin disorders: pemphigus foliaceous and bullous pemphigoid. These two skin diseases differ mainly is what layer of the skin is being attacked with the more serious bullous pemphigoid attacking deeper layers. This article covers the clinical signs, diagnosis and treatments.
