Prolonged Gestation not Uncommon
The wide range of the length of normal gestation in mares requires that the diagnosis of prolonged gestation be made only after the pregnancy persists after 350 days of gestation. Normal births have occurred up to 13 months post breeding. At 350 days it makes sense to ultrasound the foal and check for abnormalities. It is unusually for late foals to be unusually large. Induction should not be considered just because of a prolonged gestation until after 365 days of pregnancy and then should be carefully considered.
