One of my horses appeared to have a bruise or abscess and was running a low grade fever. She has some softening in her heel, and the lameness is much more subtle now. However, she now had bumps on her belly that look like rain rot. (She goes in our pond daily.) They are swollen bumps about the size of a dime or nickel. Some have developed crusts. Can horses develop a fever during the onset of a bacterial skin infection?

      Hello lsweeny,
Usually not but it depends on the organism and severity of the infection. I would not expect a light infection of dermatophilus in a otherwise healthy horse to cause fever. A severe infection in a debilitated horse will.
