      Hi dr O
My yearling was recently diagnosed with OC in one hind fetlock by routine X-rays. Surgery is recommended. However when talking to the surgeon I learned that the chip was the result of an avulsion fracture – which is often mistaken with OCD – and I am trying to find more info about this? Can you point me out some articles that discuss the difference between OCD and avulsion fracture that result in a chip? Also, she told me that these chips rarely cause problem for performance however for dressage it is recommended to remove it just in case. The filly has no clinical signs whatsoever at this time. Apparently if it does cause problem eventually, it would be too late for surgery by the time there are clinical signs. What do you think about that? Also, I would like to know if this type of OC is heritable as much as other type of OCD? If this mare was used as a broodmare would she have a risk to pass that along?

      Hello clauee,
There are no articles that discuss the differential between an avulsion fracture and an OC lesion as that should be pretty straight forward with the standard two views. The problem with waiting is that the fractures piece may cause arthritis which is the reason for the too late statement. Considering treatment if you are unsure, the thing to do is to have the radiographs referred to a orthopedic specialist for a second opinion.
