Seven weeks ago my horse got a rope burn. It looked ok for several hours then his leg swelled up and he was lame. The vet gave me antibiotics for him and I was told to use antibiotic ointment on the wound which is on the back of his pastern. The swelling and lameness disappeared in a few days but a dark hard crust formed over the wound. I thought it would heal and fall off but it has been 7 weeks now with no change. What can I do to help this? It is very disfiguring and I am concerned that the wound is not healed.

      Hello mokac,
These type rope burns can take time. I am assuming the horse is sound and all signs of swelling and heat are gone. I believe we are looking at a mixture of dead skin / blood cells and serum exudation and does appear to be part of a normal healing response however I cannot rule out proud flesh covered with scabs, which may require a different treatment. I also cannot rule out a chronic hyperkeratotic state when the scarred dermis is forming a thick irregular keratin (keloid) outer surface. Is the exudate attached to the hairs or are these scabs that cover still healing skin? If they are attached to the hairs they can simply be cut out, if they are still scabs attached to the healing skin you may want to try a topical that promotes skin healing with vitamin E and aloe. If your horse is forming proud flesh or if this is a forming keloid you will want to have your veterinarian out to discuss options such as surgery, anti-scar creams (silicone and skin nutrients). First a diagnosis then a appropriate treatment. We do have other articles on wound healing at Wounds and Burn Healing.

Turned out that there was some kind of skin infection taking over. Vet gave me some cream with more than one antibiotic plus cortisone and it is almost cleared up. Thank you.
