      Hi DrO

I have a yearling filly who just go diagnosed with OCD in one fetlock, by doing routine Xrays. Other joints (stifles, hocks, and other fetlock) are “clean”.

      My questions are:
      – you mention that Xrays alone cannot rule out OCD. So, there could be more to what we see?
      – we can’t xray hips and other joints, but we don’t often hear these joints are affected by OCD. What is your opinion on that? Is it possible that OCD develops in these joints for a foal and we just never know until training and behavioral issues arise?
      – would you personally buy a horse with OCD for a career in dressage?

      Thank you

When we say “rule out” that means a set of clean radiographs cannot completely dispel that it is present. Some lesions are too mild (early) or not caught at the right angle of the beam. For a lesion that is present the radiographs may miss the extent of the lesion or the involvement of the overlying cartilage as they may not be evident radiographically. The equipment and technique used will greatly affect the sensitivity of the exam. Yes, it can be the lesion is early or in some cases the lesion develops as a result of exercise. Training is often where clinical evidence of OC becomes evident. As to purchasing a horse with OC, in general no, but extent and location of the lesion and the cost vs the potential value of the horse, would also enter into the decision.
